"Painting people is the same as rendering any other item in the painting whether it is a truck, tree or albatross- it has to have the same degree of finish and colouring consistant with rest of the painting - not a cutout item. When some painters depict a person a sudden tightness developes, small brushes are used and every button and crease is faithfully drawn. The painted individual suddenly looks out of place and overworked". "I prefer to show people in the painting to continue the illusion and the mood. Leave it up to the viewer to decide who the person is - it may remind them of somebody". "People have bought my paintings because I have painted somebody who looks just like Uncle George sitting on the fence. I just made it up because the painting needed somebody sitting right there". "People can often be the jewels in the picture. Here's a chance to use strange and unusual colours straight from the tube- these colours might be a jumper or dress. You can make them up for the sake of the composition". "Just like the rest of the painting a few simple strokes will tell the story".
