This reference photo is the result of lots of photos around Carlton Gardens on this Melbourne wintery day. This composition should create a painting as is but the fountain may be a bit 'middling'-may have to crop finished painting.
Minimal drawing, masking some lights, and first washes. Create a light flare behind near trees and warm underpaint for foreground.
Distant buildings painted in one pass dropping in different colours to represent garden planting and building facets.
Cool distant lawn area merging to warm foreground. Irregular shapes in nearby grassy area
Spray and spatter remaining winter leaves on trees. More shapes on grass areas with cool to warm greens to the foreground
Using indigo well dosed with other colours to create back-lit tree trunks
Shadows using cobalt and crimson and warmed against the near trees, painted in curvy tapering shapes
People painted simply using new colours in addition to the original limited pallette. Extra passages painted on distant objects for variety and interest.
Added extra trees and other dabs to create variety and distance. Matted and signed "Winter Light, Carlton Gardens, Melbourne"
