Below is the reference photo used for the July painting. Murray Grey cattle on good grass in the morning light.
Drew many arrangements for the individuals and ended up with three - one in the tree shadow. Masked the lights on the heifers(?) and then painted around the tree with the first washes
Distant tree shapes washed into partially rewetted sky. Painted around the sunlit trunks in the distance Grassy areas - horizontal brushing in the distance to slanting slashes in the foreground.
Second washes of varying shapes for tree foliage in the middle distance.
Stronger mix forshadow areas on the cattle leaving the lights for the sun lit flanks. Gum tree gets a dose of warm paint in the shadow to represent the reflection from left
Broken shadows in the long grass tie together the items
Look at later. Applied a little foreground shadow to the darkened Murray Grey and coming behind the middle one. Small crop of the foreground, matted and signed - "Murrey Grey Threesome""
